Een type studie waarin 500.000 of meer genetische variaties verspreid over het gehele genoom tegelijkertijd worden geanalyseerd in het DNA van grote aantallen (meer dan 1.000) monsters afkomstig van gezonde personen en mensen met een bepaalde ziekte.

Magnetic resonance imaging
Magnetische Resonantie Computer Tomografie. Een onschadelijke beeldvormende techniek waarmee dwarsdoorsneden van het lichaam kunnen worden gemaakt. Het maakt gebruik van de eigenschap van atoomkernen om onder invloed van radiogolven zelf energie uit te gaan stralen.

Transient Ischemic Attack
Transiënte Ischemische Aanval. Een tijdelijke vermindering van de doorbloeding van een meestal klein gebied in de hersenen. De klinische verschijnselen zijn binnen 24 uur volledig verdwenen.

Definities

Incidentie
Het aantal nieuwe gevallen van of nieuwe personen met een bepaalde ziekte in een bepaalde periode, absoluut of relatief.
Prevalentie
Het aantal gevallen of personen met een bepaalde ziekte op een bepaald moment (punt-prevalentie) of in een bepaalde periode, bijvoorbeeld per jaar (periode-prevalentie), absoluut of relatief.
Standaardisatie
Het vergelijkbaar maken van cijfers (bijvoorbeeld sterftecijfers) die betrekking hebben op verschillende jaren of populaties, door rekening te houden met verschillen in bijvoorbeeld leeftijdsverdeling. Een veel gebruikte methode is zogenaamde 'directe standaardisatie', die de leeftijdsspecifieke cijfers van een populatie (de 'indexpopulatie') toepast op de leeftijdsverdeling van een gekozen 'standaardpopulatie'.
