Maat voor ziektelast ('burden of disease') in een populatie (uitgedrukt in tijd); opgebouwd uit het aantal verloren levensjaren (door vroegtijdige sterfte), en het aantal jaren geleefd met gezondheidsproblemen (bijvoorbeeld een ziekte), gewogen voor de ernst hiervan (ziektejaarequivalenten). In deze maat komen drie belangrijke aspecten van de volksgezondheid terug, te weten 'kwantiteit' (levensduur) en 'kwaliteit' van leven, en het aantal personen dat een effect ondervindt.

Het instrument bestaat uit 8 dimensies: fysiek functioneren, rolbeperkingen door fysieke gezondheidsproblemen, pijn, algemene gezondheidsbeleving, vitaliteit, sociaal functioneren, rolbeperkingen door emotionele problemen, en geestelijke gezondheid. Deze 8 dimensies kunnen bovendien gesommeerd worden in een lichamelijke en een psychische hoofddimensie
